Edward A. Smallwood
Ed is an experienced litigator with nearly 20 years of experience in state and federal courts in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. His practice is focused upon defending companies, individuals, and insurers in the fields of toxic tort litigation (including asbestos, benzene, silica, and environmental exposure claims), utility and energy litigation, employer liability, industrial accidents, medical malpractice/nursing home litigation, commercial litigation, product liability litigation, and insurance coverage litigation. Ed is a frequent speaker at mass litigation, utility, and toxic tort conferences, and is currently national coordinating counsel for multiple product manufacturers in asbestos litigation.
Focusing on utility and energy matters, Ed has represented a number of Fortune 500 utility and mining companies in litigation matters that include catastrophic injury, deliberate intent, and wrongful death matters, including litigation arising from fires and explosions, falls, entrapments, electrical contacts, and toxic tort exposures. Ed’s product liability experience includes defending manufacturers and suppliers of industrial and mining equipment, consumer products, asbestos-containing products, and component manufacturers. Ed actively defends physicians and nursing homes in medical malpractice and negligence. Ed has extensive experience handling trucking and transportation cases including large catastrophic truck accidents involving death, paralysis, and traumatic brain injuries. Ed also represents numerous insurance companies in coverage analysis and litigation, as well as represents clients in employment and commercial matters.
Prior to entering private practice, Ed was an Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in Kanawha County, West Virginia.
