John D. Shea

Jack’s practice focuses on the defense of insureds and self-insureds in complex commercial litigation.  Jack has extensive experience in cases involving product liability, construction defect and construction accidents, professional negligence, premises liability, trucking and transportation, Directors and Officers liability, employment practices, and ERISA. Jack has also handled class action cases involving fair debt collection practices and telephone solicitations and marketing.

Jack also has handled several cases involving misappropriation of trade secrets, enforcement of non-compete restrictions, and other breach of contract claims.

Jack recently served as lead trial counsel obtaining a unanimous defense verdict for Mane USA, Inc. after a five week trial in New Jersey Federal District Court. In what was labeled as the largest misappropriation of trade secrets case in the history of New Jersey, the jury rejected claims by Swiss fragrance giant Givaudan Fragrances Corporation that Mane conspired with a former Givaudan perfumer to misappropriate over 600 trade secret fragrance formulas valued at over $80 million. Prior to trial, Mane had obtained partial summary judgment dismissing portions of Givaudan’s claims. That ruling obtained national attention as an important case regarding the potential trade secret liability for subsequent employers. (See Givaudan Fragrances Corp. v. Krivda, 2013 US Dist. Lexis 153437.) The Third Circuit Court of Appeals has affirmed the pre-trial rulings and the jury’s verdict.

Jack also had significant experience in coverage matters involving asbestos pre-packaged bankruptcy cases, environmental contamination cases including landfill, UST and petroleum pipeline leakage, and toxic tort cases involving chemical exposure, hearing loss, and repetitive stress.  Jack also handles excess workers’ compensation and employers liability coverage matters.

Jack has served as national coordinating counsel in product recall and product liability claims. His practice is national in scope and he has, in recent years, handled litigation in Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas. Jack has been recognized in regional trade journals as a top attorney, and has been rated a BV® Distinguished™ lawyer by Martindale-Hubbell’s peer review rating system.

Jack served as Managing Partner of the Firm’s New Jersey office from 2010-2012.
