Litchfield Cavo Honors Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a Day of Service
On Monday, January 17, 2022, Litchfield Cavo LLP’s law offices were closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day. MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a “national day of service.” To honor his legacy, members of the Litchfield Cavo community participated in various service projects. A few examples of those projects include the following:
Eight members of our New York City office raised funds for Girls Inc. of New York City and met their goal of providing school supplies for a first-generation college freshman. This nonprofit organization provides life-transforming programs to more than 8,000 girls throughout New York City through education and advocacy to prepare girls for navigating gender, economic and social barriers.
Our St. Louis office volunteered their day by training and socializing “Jag”, a service dog in training at CHAMP Assistance Dogs. Jag is currently being trained by a St. Louis partner for 18-20 months. The St. Louis office assists with Jag’s training by helping mold a well-socialized dog. He visits the office, attends depositions and makes court appearances. In addition to their assistance dog training program, the organization offers an education program, therapy dog team, puppy-raising program and an assistance dog training program at a Missouri Department of Corrections women’s prison.
Our New Jersey office donated to the Food Bank of South Jersey, an organization offering food assistance, nutritional education and food wellness programs that teach and encourage a nutritious lifestyle. Others made blankets to donate to Project Linus, which were then distributed to local children in need. This organization provides a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are ill, traumatized or impoverished through new handmade blankets and afghans. Another member volunteered with Americorps, a federal agency with a mission to improve lives, strengthen communities and foster engagement through service and volunteering. Separately, another member assisted with the collection and delivery of supplies for a local animal shelter and digitally transcribed historical documents for the Smithsonian Institute, the world’s largest museum, education and research complex.
Members of our Hartford office organized a donations drive for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford. This youth organization provides a positive environment for children and teens throughout the City of Hartford by providing academic assistance, leadership development, access to technology and exposure to colleges and careers.
A member of our Chicago office and her son organized a food drive for their local church’s Backpack Buddies Food Pantry Program, which partners with local school districts and other churches in the area to deliver donated items to children in need.
